Language and Literature

In the last weeks we have discussed our summative assessments for the unit of Mother’s Day. Before the starter activity during the midterm break, we were asked to read the book Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo and make a vocabulary list. For the starter activity for our next unit, Kensuke’s Kingdom, we were paired up and had activity pages assigned to us according to the chapters. After that we were asked to create a graphic representation to show what each of our chapters was about. Then we were asked to switch our posters with another pair and try to explain their chapter of the book.

After returning from the mid-term break we started our new unit on ratio, rates and proportion. We learnt how to compare quantities of same kind with ratios and then progressed to proportional ratios. It was very interesting to work on problems from everyday life comparing quantities and maps.  We learnt how to represent large real life maps on scaled down smaller version using proportions. Some quantities behave differently in relation to each other and this was taught to us with direct and inverse relationship.

We are now learning about comparing quantities of different kinds using rates and costs. We have enjoyed exploring problems from real life application of decision making using this concept.

Language and literature

In the last  two weeks we started our unit ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ by Charles Dickens. First, we started our amazingly long and detailed research task for which we were divided into four groups. Two groups were assigned research task on ‘The French Revolution’ and the other two were assigned ‘The life and works of Charles Dickens’. To conduct this task, we were given research organizers. In order to develop this skill, we framed questions that would help us cover all aspects of the topic but we had to be careful about avoiding questions that were either too narrow or too broad. We have now received feedback from our teacher and are finalizing our findings from the various sources.

We also started reading the book ‘A Tale of Two Cities’. We have understood the Global Context, Key Concept, Related Concepts and Statement of Inquiry for the unit. Finally, we started analysis of the plot and characters of each of the chapters.

Thereafter, we inquired about the application of these separation techniques in daily life.

Physics

After our SA ended on the unit ‘Force and Motion’, the new unit ‘Heat’ was introduced. The first thing we did was to understand the basic concepts of heat by discussing with each other and bringing out real life examples on heat and temperature. We represented our knowledge using mind maps. We are looking forward to study the different scales of temperature and their relations.
